Light bulbs were popping yesterday!

Light bulbs were popping yesterday!
Metaphorically speaking.
You know that moment when something just ‘clicks’ as you learn something new that suddenly makes some past experiences make total sense.
Such was the lightbulbs going on I saw as I delivered yesterday’s session.
In our penultimate session of the CPD certified Talent Hub yesterday, we focused on Emotional Intelligence.
A subject I personally love delivering.
Accepting the fact our thoughts impact our emotions, which impact our actions which impact everyone around us – including ourselves, whether we realise it or not, enables us to take action before we risk negatively impacting others.
But it isn’t something we consciously always think about.
Maya Angelou, the American author, poet and activist said:
‘People will forget what you said. They will forget what you did. But they will never forget how you made them feel.”
The ‘good’ and the ‘bad’ is a task involving thinking of two people from the same category – teacher, manager or work colleague you knew previously.
The ‘good’ is the person who really empowered you, the ‘bad’ is the opposite.
We split a sheet of paper into two columns to give clear comparisons of the results as we scored each in areas of honesty, integrity, empowerment etc.
The difference in the overall scores was clear.
So was Maya’s words. Regardless of how long ago the respective relationships took place, the feeling each left were still as clear for all delegates – in one case almost two decades later.
The reflective homework was to consider how others see them.
With the tools learnt over the previous weeks of the Talent Hub – what actionable steps can be taken to ensure we do not negatively impact others.
How do you think people would remember you years after you worked with them?
The ‘good’ leaving feelings of empowerment and positivity or the ‘bad’ complete opposite.
Either way, your impact will last – strive to make it a good one.
